A Historic Tournament The tournament took place at a hillside resort three hours outside Hanoi, where the region's finest strategists gathered to compete across four medal events. Vietnam dominated the competition, claiming three gold medals and showcasing their deep connection to this traditional game. The Vietnamese team secured victories in both team blitz events and individual competitions, demonstrating the country's rich Xiangqi heritage. Despite having "almost no spectators" at the venue, the matches were viewed intently online, particularly in Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries where thousands of enthusiasts followed every move. Players sat silently over thick fabric boards, deep in concentration as they navigated the complex tactical landscape of this millennia-old game. Xiangqi's complexity surpasses Western chess in many ways, played on a nine-by-ten grid with pieces moved along 90 intersections, featuring unique elements like the river that divides the board and palace zones that restrict royal movements. Games can range from lightning-fast 10-15 minute blitz encounters to epic five-hour strategic battles, each offering its own tempo and tactical depth. Cultural Heritage in Digital Form In Vietnam, where the country's shared border and long history with China has made Xiangqi wildly prolific, "each province, each city has events for children" according to tournament arbiters. This app preserves and celebrates that cultural connection, allowing you to witness the skill and foresight that define Southeast Asian Xiangqi at its finest. From opening innovations to endgame mastery, explore the games that made history. Watch as players like Malaysia's Sim Yip How, who "picked up the game at age seven after watching masters battle" at his father's coffee shop, competed alongside Vietnam's champions in this groundbreaking tournament.
